I love making my own homemade seasoning mixes, and this homemade Italian seasoning recipe is a particularly handy one to have around. It’s true that you can just buy a big jar of pre-made store bought Italian seasoning, but it’s usually cheaper to make your own seasoning mixes using what you already have in your spice cupboard and it’s really great to be able to just whip up a seasoning mix on your own whenever you run out.

I never even worry about keeping things like taco seasoning in the house anymore because I know I can always just mix my own whenever the mood strikes! Also, when you’re making your own seasoning blends, you can take things one step further and make them using your own dried herbs from your garden for a truly gourmet experience. That’s definitely a goal of mine for this gardening season.

Italian Seasoning Ingredients

What’s in this easy Italian seasoning? You probably already have quite a few of the ingredients already in your kitchen. You’ll need:

  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Dried basil
  • Dried oregano
  • Dried parsley
  • Dried thyme
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Dried rosemary

Uses for the Homemade Seasoning

Italian seasoning is great in Italian dishes of course, but it’s also a pretty versatile, good-for-everything seasoning mix. I love to have it made up to use in soups, sauces, or for perfectly seasoned veggies. Mix up a double batch if you like to cook a lot because this one can be used often for all kinds of things! If you want to whip up your own Italian salad dressing, just mix 1 tablespoon of the dry seasoningmixture with 2-ish tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 3-ish tablespoons of oil, and 1-ish tablespoon of water, or according to your own tastes. 🙂

How to Make Homemade Italian Seasoning

There are quite a few different versions of Italian seasoning out there but this one I’m sharing with you here today is my very favorite. I think it has just the right balance of flavors and it seems to work really well time after time. This is an unsalted seasoning, but feel free to add in coarse salt to taste along with the other spices and herbs if you want to have your salt already mixed in.

This recipe makes enough to fill a little mason jar, but as I said, you can double the recipe and use a larger container if that suits you better. 🙂

Homemade spice blends are all super simple to make and make you feel so accomplished. For this Italian seasoning blend, simply add all the ingredients to a medium bowl by the teaspoon or tablespoon and mix all the ingredients together until it looks like everything is well distributed throughout the mixture.

Transfer the mixture to an airtight container; something like a small mason jar or a plastic food container with a tight fitting lid works well. Always store your spices in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness for all your future culinary adventures.

Use a mortar and pestle just before adding this seasoning to a recipe to really release the full aroma.

The Completed Homemade Italian Seasoning Mix

These homemade dried seasoning mixes also make great little gifts if you use a small glass jar and pair a fun label with it. Any type of food-safe, tightly sealed jar will work well for homemade Italian blend. You get bonus points from me if the herbs all came from your own garden too!   • 2tbspDried basil

Definitely give this one a try if you have all of these herbs and spices in your spice cupboard already. It’s a really fun and quick little project and most spice drawers have basic things like basil, oregano, rosemary, and thyme. It’s so satisfying to cook with a spice blend that you made yourself!
