In 2019, 165,191 visa applications for Denmark were received across the world. Of these, 14,412 (8.7%) were denied. The Embassy of Denmark in Abuja received 1,865 applications and 1,176 (62.9%) were denied.
Applying for a Denmark Schengen Visa from Nigeria
If you are a citizen of Nigeria, you will need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in Denmark.
Visa applications must be submitted to VFS Global in Abuja and Lagos. Your application will be sent to the Danish Embassy in Abuja.
The embassy processes visa applications within 15 days. This can be extended to 45 days if further processing is required. You should apply well in advance. You may apply up to 6 months before your trip.
Please note, the embassy has a limited weekly quota of 50 applications, so early booking with VFS is recommended in order to secure a visa before your travel date.
Types of Schengen visas offered at VFS Global in Nigeria
There are different types of visas available and the one you need to apply for depends on the reason you are traveling to Denmark. Make sure you apply for the correct one.
Short-stay visa – up to a maximum of 90 days for the purposes of:
- Tourist
- Business
- Culture, sports & study

Long-stay visa – for over 90 days for the purposes of:
- Work and residence
- Family members of EU/EEA nationals

You can choose to have a single or multiple entry visa.
- A single entry visa means that you can enter Denmark once only. When you leave, your visa will become invalid.
- A multiple entry visa allows youto travel in and out of Denmark as many times as you wish during the dates of your visa.

Step 1 – Identify visa type
The first thing you’ll need to do is to make sure the visa you are applying for is the correct one. Click on “visa type”:

Step 2 – Begin your application

Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application centre is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 4 – Pay your fees
The consular fees for your visa are payable by debit card in Naira at the counter in the application center in Lagos or Abuja. Due to currency exchanges, the fee can change without notice. The VFS service charge is paid when you book your appointment. Both visa and service fees are non-refundable.

Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
You must submit your visa application to VFS Global in person. It’s important that you follow the guidelines on the day of your appointment, to ensure a successful visit:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
- If you haven’t paid your visa fee online, you can pay your fees once you get to the center
- Submit your fingerprints and photograph (biometrics)
- Children under 18 years old need to be accompanied by an adult and this cannot be a member of VFS Global staff
- If you miss your appointment on the scheduled day, you will need to book a new appointment after 24 hours from your original appointment date
- Without biometrics information, your application will not be processed

Step 6 – Track your application
To track the status of your application, go to “step 6 – track your application” and click on the link. Key in your reference number and last name:
Step 7 – Collect your passport
When a decision has been returned from the embassy to VFS Global, you will receive an email and you can pick up your documents from the visa application center. You can also choose to have your passport returned by courier. This service costs an additional N4,500.
If you collect your documents in person, take the receipt issued by VFS Global and your ID.
The decision is either:
Approved – in which case you will receive your passport with a visa sticker. It is your responsibility to check that theinformation on your visa is correct. If not, you should tell VFS Global or the Danish Embassy immediately
Refused – in which case you will receive a refusal letter with your passport, explaining the reason behind the refusal. The letter also gives information about appealing the decision
Reasons for a rejected application include:
- You have overstayed on a visa previously – If this has happened in the past, it could affect your chance of getting a visa in the future
- Passport was issued more than 10 years ago – Your passport needs to have been issued in the last 10 years. If not, you need to get a new one before applying for a visa
- Fake documents – Do not attempt to provide fake documents as the embassy will find out and you won’t get your visa
Documents Required
You will find document checklists on VFS Global’s website, so you should take a look at them before applying. Documents for each type of visa as different. If you fail to submit everything, your application could be refused. You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!
Documents include:
- A printout of the application cover letter
- Passport photoaccording to photograph specifications (colour, 35×45 mm)
- Current passport – valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended stay in the Schengen Area, at least 2 blank pages & copies of passport pages (in color)
- Previous passports (if any) – coloured copies of bio page(s) and of previous Schengen visas and entry/exit stamps
- Introduction letter from you introducing yourself, explaining the purpose, duration & itinerary of the visit
- Proof of social ties to home country – marriage certificate, child(ren)’s birth certificate(s), proof of employment, company registration. If employed: introductory letter from employer, printed on company letterhead, including approved period of leave of absence; If student: introductory letter from School, printed on school’s letterhead, school ID, admission letter and academic transcripts ; If self–employed: CAC registration of company
- Overseas travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen countries. The insurance is to cover for the entire duration of the stay in the Schengen area for a minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR for all risks, e.g. accident, illness, medical emergency evacuation, etc.
- Proof of transport – round trip airline/train ticket reservation, car rental agreement etc
- Proof of accommodation – Hotel bookings or host guarantee/sponsorship of accommodation covering the whole duration of the intended stay
- Proof of funds – financial support/means of subsistence – If employed: Original personal bank statements for the last 3 months & last 3 pay slips; If applicant is business owner: company bank statements x 3 months
- Invitation letter (if required) – stating name, address, relationship to host and duration of stay
- For minors – written consent from parents & passports or other ID with photo and signature, birth certificate of the minor & parents ID
