Day 2: San Jose fly to Tortuguero

Meet our driver for your transfer to the Domestic terminal to board domestic flight to Tortuguero Airstrip. Meet a representative of Tortuga Lodge for a short boat transfer to lodge. A quick flight will give you a bird’s-eye view of Tortuguero National Park on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. For the next two nights, you’ll stay at Tortuga Lodge, perched on a rainforest-covered sandbar. The beaches here are a significant nesting ground for green sea turtles who lay eggs from July to October. Hatchlings start appearing in late August through to November.

Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious lunch before engaging in one of the signature experiences included in your stay or hike the trails behind the lodge on your own (be sure to be out of the forest by 4:45pm)

Located in the extreme northeast of Costa Rica, Tortuguero is accessible only by small plane or boat, along the famous Tortuguero Canals. This system of rivers and man-made channels parallels the coast and cuts through beautiful primary forest. The area was turned into a national park in 1975. It is one of the areas with the greatest biological diversity of the country. The name Tortuguero relates to the Spanish word for turtle as this is the most important nesting site in the entire western half of the Caribbean for the green turtle. Other species of sea turtles like the leatherback and hawksbill also nest on the wide beaches of the park and refuge where most exploring is done by small boat, although some hiking trails are available. There is a small village and a good offer of hotels and tours to fully enjoy this wondrous place.

2 Night's at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens - Miss. Evelyn Suite Room with A/C (TJE Package)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3: Tortuguero

A guided bird walk is a great way to begin the day if you’re not opposed to an early start. Return to the lodge for breakfast, then hop in a boat for a trip through the national park’s waterways. Keep your eyes peeled for macaw, three-toed sloth, river otter and alligator. There are also three kinds of monkey here: capuchin, spider and congo. In the afternoon, why not hit the beach, or pull up a stool in the lodge bar where they mix a mean cocktail. Leave the lodge by boat, shared with other guests, with your naturalist guide to explore the creeks of the National Park or join one of the available experiences included in your program which can take you deeper into the rainforest or to the nearby town. The morning hours are especially active in the rain forest, when wildlife is hungry and in search of their energy source for the day. Return to the lodge in time for lunch.

In the afternoon journey back through time and glimpse the fascinating history and culture of Tortuguero Village, first known as Turtle Bogue or treat yourself to the only birds-eye view of the majestic Caribbean lowlands on this two-hour intermediate-level hike up Cerro Tortuguero. Return to the lodge by boat.

Late afternoon you are welcome to Discover the magical twilight hours of the rainforest on a two hour walk through Tortuga Lodge’s private 26-hectare nature reserve. Join your fellow guests and the local naturalist guide at the front desk to be fitted with rubber boots and receive a rain poncho and flashlight.

Day 4: Tortuguero- Pavona-Pacuare

Transfer Tortuguero - La Pavona - Pacuare Lodge

It’s quite the jungle journey today. First a boat trip to Guapiles. There, swap into a four-wheel-drive vehicle to venture deep into the Talamanca Mountains. After an hour or so, you’ll meet the Pacuare River, a symbol of life for the Cabecar people who live here. The 4x4 can’t go any further, so instead you’ll cross the river in a gondola strung from a cable above the river. On the other side, an electric vehicle is waiting to take you to Pacuare Lodge, an eco-retreat surrounded by rainforest. After breakfast, transfer shared with other guests by boat back to La Pavona dock where you will be transferred to Santa Marta, where you will change to a 4x4 vehicle to the riverbank, where you will board a cable car to cross the river and transfer to lodge.

This area is formed by the forests of the Atlantic and it protects the rich biodiversity on the sides of the Pacuare River which begins at about two thousand meters in the Talamanca Mountain Range and empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The reserve is home to the indigenous Cabecar community, as well as for abundant flora and fauna. The powerful waters and topography of the river make this area a fantastic tourist attraction providing a dream scenario for adventure sports surrounded by the beauty of deep green forests, waterfalls and natural pools.

Day 8: Arenal

Private Arenal Volcano National Park

The sweet, smiling face of Costa Rica is the sloth, an icon of the country’s spectacular rainforest. Arenal is home to both the two and three-toed sloth. On a private tour through the La Fortuna rainforest see if you can spot both species today. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter the multicolored toucan and the blue jeans dart frog, as well as iguana and monkey.

To discover the marvelous natural wonder that is Arenal Volcano, this excursion will take you on two hikes through Arenal Volcano National Park and boat tour on Lake Arenal. A naturalist guide will explain things on your way such as the history of the Volcano and the park as well as about the different plants and animals you encounter on your hike. We start our tour on the trail that will take us through the 1992 lava flow. On this first part we will hike on a trail through the second growth forest until we get to the rocks that were erupted out of the volcano in 1992. On clear days there are spectacular views of the colossal Volcano.

The second part is a hike on the “La Peninsula” (the peninsula) trail that takes us to the shores of Lake Arenal. First, we pass through beautiful topical forests to a tower of 18 meters (approximately 60 feet) in height where you will have the best panoramic view of the beautiful view—of both Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal. Once your hike takes you to the shore of Lake Arenal, you’ll be able to cool off with a cold drink before you get on the boat that will take you on a tour of the lake to arrive to a spot known locally as “el tapón” (the earth dam that helps form Lake Arenal). Here a shuttle van will be waiting to take you back to your hotel.

Transfer Arenal - Rio Celeste Waterfall – Bijagua (Upala)

Hike Tenorio Volcano National Park & Rio Celeste Waterfall

The beautiful Rio Celeste snakes through the park, its heavenly blue colour created by two streams of crystalline water coming together. Lunch at local restaurant. After arriving at Origins Luxury Lodge, you have the afternoon at leisure to explore this scenic spot perched on the mountainside.

Set in what seems a movie scene, Rio Celeste is the encounter of two rivers that magically change color into vibrant tones of blue, captivating visitors who are already impressed by the raw beauty of the surrounding nature. The phenomenon is the result of chemical reactions produced by the minerals of the Tenorio volcano, which gives the name to the national park and has four volcanic peaks and two craters.
