Australia's Ashes Squad Shakeup: Konstas Out, Weatherald In - All You Need to Know (2025)

A bold move has been made by Australia's national selectors as they prepare for the first Ashes Test against England. The squad announcement has sparked intrigue and debate among cricket enthusiasts.

Sam Konstas has been dropped, making way for the exciting debut prospect of Jake Weatherald. This decision has opened up a host of strategic possibilities for the team.

Marnus Labuschagne, who experienced a brief exile from the Test team earlier this year, is poised for a comeback. His inclusion follows an impressive start to the season with Queensland, but the question remains: where will he bat? The squad selection has raised eyebrows by opting for a specialist opener in Weatherald over a more adaptable spare batter.

In a further twist, all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster have both been named in the squad. However, the composition of the playing XI remains uncertain, as it's unclear if both will feature together as they did in Australia's last four Test matches.

With Pat Cummins absent due to a lumbar stress injury, Steven Smith steps up as captain. Cummins will travel with the team to Perth, aiming to build up his bowling loads in time for the second Test in Brisbane.

The four-man attack seems set, comprising Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, and Nathan Lyon. At least one all-rounder will provide additional support, with Lyon returning to the XI after being omitted from Australia's last Test in Jamaica, where the selectors opted for a four-quick strategy.

Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott have been named as reserve fast bowlers. Doggett returns after withdrawing from the Caribbean tour due to a hip injury, while Abbott retains his place following his reserve role in the West Indies and Sri Lanka tours.

Despite Michael Neser's impressive start to the season for Queensland, taking 11 wickets in his first two Shield matches on batter-friendly pitches, he has been left out of the squad.

Josh Inglis has been included as the reserve wicketkeeper, but his versatility extends beyond keeping. He can also step in as a reserve batter, as demonstrated in Barbados when he filled in for the injured Smith at No. 4. Inglis also kept wicket during Australia's last Test bowling innings in Jamaica, replacing Alex Carey due to concussion.

The Australian squad for the first Test against England:

Steven Smith (capt), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster
